Position Title:  Control Engineer

Department:Digitalization and Software Technology

Reports To:Senior Director & Chief Engineering

Location:US or CAN

 

Position Summary:


The Control Engineer will lead the implementation of BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) capable of ultra-fast response to dispatch commands and grid supply variations. This candidate should be familiar with power systems, utility generation, protection, and transmission systems, as well as modern industrial networks and utility communication protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and negotiating technical contract exhibits for fast response BESS plant controllers.
  • Managing stakeholders, utilities, and suppliers to design and deliver fast response controllers.
  • Verifying testing and commissioning of advanced BESS plant controllers.
  • Mentoring team members and supervising work processes to ensure high-quality deliverables are developed within timeline and budget commitments.
  • Developing new tools, implementing processes, providing feedback, and working with other stakeholders to ensure continuous improvement of the technology/engineering/delivery value stream.

 

Related Experience:
The ideal candidate will have domain experience in solar PV or battery energy storage. The Digital-Twin Software Engineer must be proficient in the following:

  • Experience with power grids, power generation, and/or renewable integration control.
  • Experience with utility market applications.
  • Experience with DigSilent PowerFactory, EMTP, or other power systems modeling tools.
  • Expertise in model-based control software development.
  • Expertise in Git workflow.
  • Experience with Linux.

 

Programming:

  • Scripting (Python, Batch).
  • Relationship & time series databases.
  • Writing automated tests.
  • Jupyter, Deepnote.

 

Cloud Platforms:

  • Experience with Azure and AWS cloud infrastructure.

Education and Professional Qualifications:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present ideas and suggestions clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences.
  • A go-getter professional with a can-do attitude, setting aggressive and measurable goals, and ready to be evaluated against them.
  • A dynamic professional capable of interacting positively and collaborating with a diverse group of people at all levels and disciplines. Must be able to engage with key clients, think on their feet, and make sound decisions within compressed timelines.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative and fluid environment.
  • Excellent time management skills, able to balance multiple projects and prioritize a variety of issues, initiatives, and objectives concurrently.
  • Disciplined and productive in an Agile environment.
  • Willingness to learn and work with tools outside the traditional stack, such as Anvil, Deepnote, and others.
  • A creative thinker, capable of developing novel solutions to established problems and evaluating their business benefits.
  • Business-savvy, able to interact with both business and technical specifications.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%, including international travel.
  • 8+ years of experience developing control software with a track record of successful production deployments.
  • A degree in engineering relevant to the industry (Electrical Engineering preferred)
